This beautiful antique Gold gilt Horseshoe brooch is Victorian Circa 1880.
The Horseshoe has long been a symbol of good luck and became a popular image in Victorian jewellery when there was an increase in superstition.
The horseshoe boasts fabulous Enamel workmanship depicting lovely blue Forget me not’s on a pink setting.
‘Forget-me-not, O Lord!’ is what a poor German knight shouted as he fell into a river. He and his lady were picking flowers by the side of the river at the time when the poor knight suddenly fell in and sank to the bottom. Upon his cries to the Lord, he threw the blue posy of flowers to his loved one. Hence, the concept of remembrance, eternal love and faithfulness grow from this.
The brooch is set in Silver Gilded in Yellow Gold and fitted with a sturdy pin and catch.
This is a wonderful antique brooch that deserves to be treasured, a great collectors piece!
